OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAMME

The Doctor of Education (EdD) programme at the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Technology (FEST), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), aims to equip education professionals with advanced knowledge, research skills, and leadership capabilities to address contemporary educational challenges. Offered in a blended format, it combines coursework, research, and a dissertation, providing flexibility for both full-time and part-time students. With a curriculum aligned to current educational needs, this comprehensive programme supports professionals in critically examining workplace-related educational issues while utilising the latest technological advancements. The inclusion of blended learning approaches ensures a dynamic and adaptable educational experience. The EdD programme also offers flexible learning pathways and recognition of prior learning. Graduates will develop critical thinking skills to generate innovative solutions, apply ethical and entrepreneurial principles, and collaborate effectively across diverse educational settings. They will also gain expertise in both qualitative and quantitative research, enhancing their ability to contribute to educational progress. This programme fosters lifelong learning, leadership, and problem-solving skills, empowering graduates to make meaningful contributions to education, research, and policy development in Malaysia and beyond.

MODE, DURATION & INTAKE

  • Mode: Mixed mode (coursework and dissertation)

  • Minimum duration: 6 semesters (3 years)

  • Maximum duration: 16 semesters (8 years)

PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES

  • PEO1 : Skilled in leading the production, dissemination and application of new knowledge in education through the critical and analytical integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics.

  • PEO2 : Empower the development of the education profession with soft skills, digital leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration aligned with global and national demands.

  • PEO3 : Apply and practice the principles of ethics, design thinking and entrepreneurial mindset in the context of educational innovation and sustainable community development.

PROGRAMME  LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of their programme, graduates develop the skills necessary to :

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

All candidates must meet the general admission requirements for UTM postgraduate programmes as outlined in the Guidelines for Evaluating Student Admission Requirements to UTM Postgraduate Programmes, Amendment 1/2013, which was approved in Senate Meeting No. 10/2012/2013 dated 19 April 2013.

SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR EdD PROGRAMME

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from UTM or from any institution of higher learning recognised by the Senate; and
  • A Master’s degree or equivalent from UTM or from any institution of higher learning recognised by the Senate; and
  • Two (2) years of work experience in education or a related field

THE  ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

  1. English language competency is not mandatory for local students.
  2. International students applying for postgraduate programmes at UTM must meet one of the following English language competency requirements:
  • Malaysian University English Test (MUET) with a minimum score of Band 4.0 or higher; or
  • IELTS/IELTS Online with a minimum score of Band 6.0 or higher; or
  • TOEFL iBT/TOEFL Online with a minimum score of 60 or higher; or
  • Cambridge English Qualifications (CEQ) B2 First (FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE), C2 Proficiency (CPE), or Linguaskill with a minimum score of 169 or higher; or
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic with a minimum score of 59 or higher; or
  • Certified Intensive English Programme Level (CIEP Level) with Level 109 or higher.
  1. Exemptions from the English language requirements may be granted to international students from countries where English is the official language, or to those who have obtained academic qualifications from institutions where English is the sole medium of instruction, and who intend to pursue further studies in Malaysia.
  2. International students who do not meet the above requirements may enrol in the Intensive English Programme (IEP) at UTM’s Language Academy or the Certified Intensive English Programme (CIEP) at any ELS Language Centre in Malaysia for a maximum duration of one year from the date of registration. Upon completing the programme, students must take MUET or any of the examinations listed in (a) to (f) to qualify for admission into their main academic programme at UTM.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS VIA APEL A (T8)

  • Must be at least 35 years old at the time of applying for the programme.
  • Must possess at least a Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent or higher (Examples: Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma).
  • Must have at least 5 years of working experience in the field of Education or a related field after completing a Bachelor’s Degree programme.
  • Must pass the APEL.A assessment for the doctoral level.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT

Candidates are required to submit a 500–1,000-word brief research proposal at the time of application.

PREREQUISITE COURSE: YHPP1013 FOUNDATION OF EDUCATION

  • Starting from the 2023/24 semester 1 session, doctoral candidates without qualifications in education or relevant work experience must pass YHPP Foundations of Education in the first semester.
  • Students may enrol in the university elective course while fulfilling the prerequisite.
  • Passing the prerequisite is compulsory in order to defend the proposal.
  • The requirement to undertake this course is mentioned in the offer letter.
  • Candidates required to undertake the YHPP Foundations of Education as a prerequisite may apply for exemption only if they meet these specific criteria. For further enquiries, please contact the Head of Department, Department of Educational Studies and Behavioural Sciences, FEST, UTM.

The minimum length for an EdD dissertation is 50,000 words (about 160 pages), and the maximum is 80,000 words (about 320 pages).
