The course requires participants to critically analyse the methods, approaches, and
issues of English Language teaching and learning. The discussion is geared towards the
development of English Language Teaching (ELT) methodology, of which participants
are exposed to the development from traditional methods, for instance, grammar
translation method to the current ELT methodology. The current methods and
approaches covered are communication approach, cooperative learning and problembased
learning. Some of the ELT issues discussed in this course are the more holistic
concept of teacher-centredness, learner autonomy & learner agency, assisted
performance, and learning communities. Participants are also given an opportunity to
conduct a case study on language teaching methodology as part of group project.
